Mr. Matthew J. Steven is licensed by the Oregon Supreme Court to serve as counsel in all of the Courts of the State of Oregon, and is also licensed by the United States District Court for the District of Oregon to serve as counsel in federal court. He graduated with high honors from Iowa State University of Science and Technology in Ames, Iowa, and from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. He clerked for the Federal Defender of Oregon, the United States District Court (Hon. Stacie F. Beckerman), and provided pro bono legal services to indigent people. He has served the courts and community as a juvenile court lawyer, an appellate attorney, and as a public defender. His practice has, until recently, been largely focused on litigation and trial work. He has had an unusually winning trial practice, drawing praise from colleagues, judges, and opponents for his strong work ethic, expansive knowledge of the art (and science) of persuasion, and good judgment.
In his free time, he enjoys traveling to warm places, playing the guitar, teaching his son how to write good software, and designing and building 3D printers.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mr. Steven worked in the software industry building complex systems for Fortune 500 companies and mom and pop shops alike. He has contributed to free software and open source projects, and continues to develop software tools to promote efficient legal work. As a young man, he worked in construction, food service, retail, insurance and sales, telecommunications, and farm labor.
He is a founding member of numerous tech businesses, including GeniusWeb which provided e-commerce services for thousands of individuals and companies, and has over 30 years of experience managing and advising small business entities.
